The apps side by side
Ratings are from the US App Store unless the row says Google Play. Where an app shows more than one price for the same plan, the table gives the range. Apps often test several prices at the same time.

| PrankAI | iPhone, Android, web | 5.0 (11 ratings) | $7.99 a week for 35 credits, $14.99 a month on the web, $59.99 a year. Credits on their own from $4.90. | Prank photos and videos from more than 100 templates or your own words. Up to four photos in one video. |
| Halo | iPhone | 4.3 (2,114 ratings) | $5.99 to $8.99 a week, $29.99 to $59.99 a year. 300 credits for $9.99. | Prank photos, couple photos, style filters and photo-to-video. |

Which one to use
- •A fake photo to text to your mom, dad or a friend: PrankAI, Halo or Menace. All three have templates for damage, strangers in the house and fake documents.
- •A video with you and a friend in it: PrankAI or Starrd. Both take two photos. PrankAI takes up to four.
- •No subscription: Starrd sells credits only. PrankAI sells credits on their own from $4.90, beside its plans.
- •Android: PrankAI or Mischief. We found no Android version of Halo, Menace, Starrd or Shots.
- •No download: PrankAI, Menace, Starrd and Mischief work in a browser.
- •Dance trends more than pranks: Shots or Starrd.
What to check before you pay
- •How many credits a video costs. A 5-second video is 25 credits on PrankAI and 100 or more on Starrd and Mischief, but a credit costs a different amount in each app.
- •Whether a failed generation gives the credits back. On PrankAI it does.
- •How to cancel. An App Store subscription is canceled in your iPhone settings. A subscription bought on a website is canceled on that website.
- •Whether the app shows a full result before you pay or only a locked preview.
What makes a prank land
The app matters less than the idea. The pranks that get the biggest reaction are aimed at one person and show something that person owns: their car with a dent, their bathroom under water, a stranger on their couch. A face edit, like a bald head or a tattoo, gets a laugh. A situation gets a reply.
